Van Eyck's probably most famous work, the Ghent Altarpiece, is considered the highlight of late medieval art. At the end of 2019 the second phase of the restoration campaign – the preparation of the panels "The Adoration of the Mystic Lamb" and its side walls – was completed. In January 2020 the lamb, freed from the old overpainting, returned to the Cathedral of Saint Bavo. There, the Ghent Altarpiece is now once again, completely visible in the Vila Chapel.
As part of the Van Eyck Year, St. Bavo’s Cathedral will house a new visitor centre which will open in spring 2021. It will exhibit an additional collection of important art treasures. Visitors will be able to take a fascinating journey through the long, rich and exciting history of the Ghent Altarpiece and the Cathedral of Ghent, wearing virtual reality headsets and discover the masterpieces in finer detail.
