New visitor centre St. Bavo’s Cathedral

from 25 March 2021

On March 25 a new visitors centre will open its doors at St Bavo's Cathedral in Ghent. It will host the restored panels of the world famous Ghent Altarpiece and a collection of art treasures such as the tombstone of Hubert Van Eyck. Go on a fascinating journey through the monumental cathedral and be amazed by Jan Van Eyck’s masterpiece.

Visitors will have the choice between a 40 minute visit or a longer tour. The short tour will include:  a brief presentation of the cathedral and of the city of Ghent anno 1430 (period when the Altarpiece was painted), a visit to Jan Van Eyck’s studio where we zoom in on the iconography and details of the Altarpiece. All this will be done through the use of a pair of virtual-reality glasses that will allow you to experience art treasures in combination with augmented reality. A truly up close and personal experience! The visit ends with a true highlight: a view on the restored Ghent Altarpiece.
