Marcel Broodthaers open letters, public poems

30 January to 1 May 2021

WIELS is planning the first retrospective exhibition and reference publication exclusively devoted to Marcel Broodthaers' vacuum-formed plastic sheets or 'industrial poems' (1968-1972). This research reveals how important this little-known project is for Broodthaers' visual and poetic production.

Marcel Broodthaers (1924-1976) was a Belgian poet and artist and is considered one of the founders of European conceptual art. His work questions views on museums, the value of art, and the reproducibility and function of language. The 'industrial poems', of which more than a hundred will be shown in WIELS, consist of visual rebusses where image is treated as text and text as image.
