Brussels Flower Carpet
City Hall - Grand
Place 1000 Brussels
11 to 15 August 2022
Every two years – around the weekend of August 15th - the Grand Place in Brussels is transformed into a magnificent Flower Carpet. More than 500,000 flowers – mainly begonias and dahlias – turn one of the world’s most beautiful central squares into a floral masterpiece. The first edition of the Flower Carpet took place in 1971. Since 1986 it’s being organized every two years.
Flower lovers can stroll around the Unesco World Heritage Site to take in the colours and fragrances, but better still is to visit the balcony of the Town Hall where you get a wide-angle view of the colourful spectacle. The carpet is 70 metres long and 24 metres wide. A hundred volunteers lay the entire carpet in less than eight hours. The begonias are grown almost exclusively in the Ghent area since 1860. Belgium is the world's largest producer of begonias: 35 million bulbs every year! 80% of the total production is exported mainly to the Netherlands, the United States, the United Kingdom, France and Germany.
