Between Heaven and Earth. The Last Supper by Dirk Bouts

9 july 2020

Dirk Bouts (ca. 1410-1475) is considered one of the most important representatives of Early Netherlandish painting. The artist came to Leuven in 1448 and lived here until his death. Among his most outstanding works is the altar of the Last Supper in St. Peter's Church. After extensive restoration, the 15th century church – a prime example of late Gothic architecture – reopened its doors in July 2020. Now, Bouts‘ masterpiece is on display again in the place for which it was created. Together with other important works, it is presented in the impressive choir gallery of the church, which is part of the M-museum Leuven.

With the help of virtual reality headsets and iPads, the masterpieces of St. Peter's Church are brought to life in an impressive way, without physically altering the space. Visitors can even look through the walls, so the art treasures in the church will be linked to places, stories and attractions in the city of Leuven.

In addition, some fine examples of religious wrought ironwork in precious metal, such as reliquaries, monstrances, chalices and devotional images, are also on display. Visitors can call up more detailed information in various languages on twelve touchscreens.
